Chiropractic & Pregnancy: What are the benefits?
By: Dr. David Laferney
Chiropractic care is a safe, drug free way to help manage many musculoskeletal symptoms and has typically included the care of pregnant patients to assure the patient a comfortable pregnancy and to help facilitate an uncomplicated labor and delivery. It has been reported that approximately 50% of all pregnant women experience back pain, pelvis pain, or a combination of both, during their pregnancy.
Spinal dysfunction related to changing load distributions specifically within the lumbar spine and sacroiliac joints play a major factor in back pain.
Direct pressure of the fetus on the lumbosacral nerve roots may also be a cause of pain.
As the fetus develops during gestation, this weight is projected forward and the lumbar lordosis is increased, placing extra stress on the intervertebral disks and facet joints.
A misaligned pelvis may make it difficult for the baby to get in the best possible position for the baby, placing increased stress on the mother and baby. The chiropractor's main role in breech presentation is to balance the pelvis and corresponding muscles and ligaments to remove the constraint to the patient's uterus to allow the fetus to assume the correct presenting position assuring that the mother has the ability to have a natural, non-invasive birth.
Other conditions that chiropractic care may improve during pregnancy in addition to low back pain can include sciatic nerve pain, sacroiliac pain, pubic symphysis pain, round ligament pain, decreased risk of preterm delivery, as well as reduced need for pain medication during pregnancy and delivery.
